A Time Of History

There have been very few days in my relatively short life that I can look back on and say, "I can't wait to tell my kids that story." The day I met Nancy, that day I got a free pizza, that time I tried mushrooms. OK, I never got a free pizza. See, that's how few there are! But, these all pale in comparison to today: the 2-day anniversary of Troy Polamalu's 40-yard interception return for a touchdown in the AFC title game.

Any stress I had about this game was washed away as the should-have-been defensive player of the year weaved his way to the Superbowl. Look for the Drizzle to be well submerged in a gallon of Anchor Steam on the first of February. Go Steelers!

Oh yeah, and goodie for Obama. Things are looking up.

Who is Better? Who is Best?

LeBron is transcendent. Kobe has three rings and a monster chip on his shoulder.

These two will get the national stage warmed up tonight. Barak brings it tomorrow. Peace, and rest easy Dr. King.

Parkour and Free Running

As long as we are on the topic of crazy shit that people do... A few years ago I was walking by a student on the computer and I glanced over to see what he was doing. He was watching a video of a guy doing some crazy jumping and flipping. I asked him what the heck it was and he told me it was "Parkour" . From Wikipedia:

Parkour (sometimes also abbreviated to PK) or l'art du d├ęplacement[1] (English: the art of displacement) is an activity with the aim of moving from one point to another as efficiently and quickly as possible, using principally the abilities of the human body.[2] It is meant to help one overcome obstacles, which can be anything in the surrounding environment—from branches and rocks to rails and concrete walls—and can be practiced in both rural and urban areas. Parkour practitioners are referred to as traceurs, or traceuses for females.

Founded by David Belle and a group of friends in France, parkour focuses on practicing efficient movements to develop one's body and mind to be able to overcome obstacles in an emergency.

Free Running is slightly different. From Wikipedia:

Free running is a physical art, in which participants (free runners) use the urban and rural areas to perform movements through its structures focused on freedom and beauty. It incorporates efficient movements from parkour, adds aesthetic vaults and other acrobatics, such as tricking and street stunts, creating an athletic and aesthetically pleasing way of moving. It is commonly practiced at gymnasiums and in urban areas that are cluttered with obstacles.

APT Flick of The Week

It is not Slumdog Millionaire, nor is it Ben Button. It is mos def not Marley and Me, nor is it Jim Carrey's Yes Man.

Let us talk about DOUBT.

An apt title for a film released in these most challenging times. Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, militarized pirates surfing the high seas, the economic crisis, failing schools, the Celtics recent losing streak, and an escalating conflict in Gaza all have the world shook.

So what does a flick about a standoff between a Priest and a Nun set in 1964 have to do with all that? Nothing and everything.

This joint unfolds with a slow and strong patience, as accusations lead to answers that lead to more questions. Moral ambiguity abounds. The fireworks fly minus the CGI. Philip Seymour Hoffman, Meryl Streep, Amy Adams, and Viola Davis bring it in droves!

Peep the trailer.

Consider making some time for this one. It will not disappoint.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Secret saved my life!, December 4, 2007
By Ari Brouillette
Please allow me to share with you how "The Secret" changed my life and in a very real and substantive way allowed me to overcome a severe crisis in my personal life. It is well known that the premise of "The Secret" is the science of attracting the things in life that you desire and need and in removing from your life those things that you don't want. Before finding this book, I knew nothing of these principles, the process of positive visualization, and had actually engaged in reckless behaviors to the point of endangering my own life and wellbeing.
At age 36, I found myself in a medium security prison serving 3-5 years for destruction of government property and public intoxication. This was stiff punishment for drunkenly defecating in a mailbox but as the judge pointed out, this was my third conviction for the exact same crime. I obviously had an alcohol problem and a deep and intense disrespect for the postal system, but even more importantly I was ignoring the very fabric of our metaphysical reality and inviting destructive influences into my life.
My fourth day in prison was the first day that I was allowed in general population and while in the recreation yard I was approached by a prisoner named Marcus who calmly informed me that as a new prisoner I had been purchased by him for three packs of Winston cigarettes and 8 ounces of Pruno (prison wine). Marcus elaborated further that I could expect to be raped by him on a daily basis and that I had pretty eyes.
Needless to say, I was deeply shocked that my life had sunk to this level. Although I've never been homophobic I was discovering that I was very rape phobic and dismayed by my overall personal street value of roughly $15. I returned to my cell and sat very quietly, searching myself for answers on how I could improve my life and distance myself from harmful outside influences. At that point, in what I consider to be a miraculous moment, my cell mate Jim Norton informed me that he knew about the Marcus situation and that he had something that could solve my problems. He handed me a copy of "The Secret". Normally I wouldn't have turned to a self help book to resolve such a severe and immediate threat but I literally didn't have any other available alternatives. I immediately opened the book and began to read.
The first few chapters deal with the essence of something called the "Law of Attraction" in which a primal universal force is available to us and can be harnessed for the betterment of our lives. The theoretical nature of the first few chapters wasn't exactly putting me at peace. In fact, I had never meditated and had great difficulty with closing out the chaotic noises of the prison and visualizing the positive changes that I so dearly needed. It was when I reached Chapter 6 "The Secret to Relationships" that I realized how this book could help me distance myself from Marcus and his negative intentions. Starting with chapter six there was a cavity carved into the book and in that cavity was a prison shiv. This particular shiv was a toothbrush with a handle that had been repeatedly melted and ground into a razor sharp point.
The next day in the exercise yard I carried "The Secret" with me and when Marcus approached me I opened the book and stabbed him in the neck. The next eight weeks in solitary confinement provided ample time to practice positive visualization and the 16 hours per day of absolute darkness made visualization about the only thing that I actually could do. I'm not sure that everybody's life will be changed in such a dramatic way by this book but I'm very thankful to have found it and will continue to recommend it heartily.

(thanks to Scaramuche for the tip)

Enjoy!

Sparrow For President

You might think to yourself, don't we already have a President...and a President Elect. Why would we need another one? Isn't the election over? Do we really need someone else cloudying our already unchlorinated political hot tub?

To answer these questions, slide over to the Sun online for poet/wildman Sparrow's take. His party, The Sudoku for All Party, has a unique platform.

This hopeful candidate covers everything from Pancivitas, Cantorism, NFL Linebackers, and non-ladies, to the establishment of a Homeopathic Foreign Policy. Get a free taste here.

This is gut busting good fun. Don't forget to vote!

Nice Pass

Check this highlight from last nights run in the Association. Big Bird get his wings dirty.

This is what is so great and terrible about the NBA. You can try to hate a team, like the Lakers, and then a 7 foot Spanish center, no offense, does something like this and they become impossible to hate.

The NBA, where you are one great play away from becoming my hero.

Just have to drop this one for all my favorite people. Holy shit! I never thought it could get any better than "Frodo Destroy the Ring." Check out more Flight of the Conchords stuff at YouTube. New Zealand stoner humor at it's finest...

The best things of 2008

That you may have missed.

APT has touched several bases this year. Barack. Samberg. Beyonce. Bon Iver. Celtics Basketball. Muppets. Jon Oates. Dark Knight. Here are my best kept secrets of 2008.

Justice. S.T.R.E.S.S. These guys are known for their dayglo electronica. They flip the script on this one and pretty much bring it like Beat It on steroids. Think Funny Games or Clock Work Orange.

Waltz with Bashir. An animated war movie about a Lebanese soldier with PTSD. Hasn't hit Portland yet, but it will.

Lady Lamb the Beekeeper. You could pass this off as some Juno-type-psuedo-indie-poo or jump onto the worldwide bandwagon. Either way expect good things in 2009 starting with a performance this Friday at One Longfellow.

Dwayne Wade. Out all last year, his understaffed Miami crew just got the best of The LeBron's. This is your future MVP.

All the best for a happy, healthy, and peaceful New Year.
