APT takes Teen Wolf very seriously. This is one of the greatest basketball movies of all time. Period. Plus, if I grow my ish out just right, I got a Scott Howard thing going on.
So color me a grinch when I say that I am concerned about this films legacy in the hands of MTV's pop culture machine. They are going the Remake-TV Series-Horror-Romance-Unintentional Comedy route.
The crew over at the Onion's AV Club are equally concerned. Hey MTV, stop fucking around with my childhood and bring back the music videos already.
A funny article from Paste Magazine concerning the evolution of the hipster. Click here to read... And click here for a more detailed view at the various stages of the cycle...
It's important for us to recognize if we're stuck in a stage, or properly evolving, or not even on the charts at all. I don't see any of those cats rocking earth-tone Dickies and a CMF t-shirt. Am I falling behind? Am I not hip? Dr. D needs to catch up with Roomie Rock and see where I may have fallen behind.
In other news, Dr. D's dipping back to the roots with this three-disc compilation from Sublime titled, "Everything Under the Sun." It features rare and unreleased, live, studio, and b-side tracks to bring you right into the Long Beach sunshine. This is my album of the month, throwing Julian Marley back into the archives.
Myself, W2, Big Brother, MC Saiyid, Lady B, Adam-ant-ium Claws and The Duke visited the garden last night. Everyone had a chance to weigh in on this this circus. Boy Genius' post summarizes my current thoughts nicely.
In other news, great blog rec from my man Jim Green...Definitive Beards...a site all APT folks will love.
Hello. It's been a while, but I couldn't not post this. Another gem by OK Go that just proves that they'd be megastars if music television was today what it once was. Simple ideas, perfect execution. And their songs are fun, dammit! Embedding was disabled, but check it out.
Plus Talib Kweli and The Roots and the lovelies from the Dirty Projectors, all live on Jimmy Fallon, who incidentally just missed meeting APT homeboy Sir Thomas of Doyle over the Thanksgiving weekend!
Celtics reserve center/power forward Rasheed Wallace thinks the NBA is going soft.
“They gotta know that he’s a damn flopper,” Wallace said. “That’s all Turkodo (pictured below holding last years All-Flopper Award) do. Flopping shouldn’t get you no where. He acts like I shot him.”
Wallace said that’s a cheap way to play defense.
“That’s not basketball, man. that’s not defense. That’s garbage, what it is. I’m glad I don’t have too much of it left.”
Reminded that he has three years left on his contract didn’t hold back his lecture, adding that Paul Pierce did nothing wrong on his dunk over Chris Bosh early in the fourth quarter.
“This game is watered down, watered down with all that flopping [crap],” he said. “They’re setting rules on us to the point where you’re taunting if you dunk on somebody. Paul dunked it and then he didn’t say nothing but it’s a tech.
“Let the Golden Child do that or one of the NBA Without Border kids do that, it’s all fine and dandy.”
My man Adam-ant-ium Claws is a devoted backpacker, climber, mountain biker, and snowboarder. He drops by APT to give us the down and dirty on Eastwood's rock climbing epic.
The Eiger Sanction...where else can you see Clint Eastwood in knickers? This right here is part 007 flick and part Baffin Mtn film festival. Eiger Sanction is classic 70's explotation with enough stereotyped beauties and politically incorrectness to please any Dirty Harry fan.
Leaving behind his tenure as prof of art to return to his first love, killing people for money and climbing, Dr. Hemlock ventures to the Swiss Alps to climb the Eiger and assassinate a member of his climbing team.
What makes this film really worth your while is Clint's authenticity. He does his own stunts and the climbing is first rate. Just don't worry about the plot holes.
"Spacious Thoughts." This track features the collaboration of musical misfits Mr. Tom Waits and Black Elvis himself, Kool Keith.
Thanks to You Aint No Picasso for the hook-up. Their full length is forcoming and features everybody and the kitchen sink. Check it...

There is nobody more exciting in the NBA today (maybe this GUY). He skipped the NCAA's to play in Italy. Then, the Knicks passed over him in the NBA Draft. Now, with the help of Coach Skiles and some stingy team defense, he has made hoops in Milwaukee relevant. Catch a glimpse, HERE.
W2 will be waving his knotty-knotty dreadlocks to this one, on repeat, all winter. As will all the rest of you. This album is hot. Dr. D hasn't scrolled off this album on his iPod for a couple weeks, truth be told. I'm sure that comes as no surprise to those that know me.
Julian Marley, one of reggae legend Bob Marley's many musical children conceived outside his legal marriage, is back again, having released only two previous albums in the past 15 years. This new 2009 release, "Awake," brings in the contemporary righteous roots reggae vibes, with stellar production and conscious lyrics, sure to make even the craziest baldheads nod their pale noggins and shake their feet. Check it at your local independent record store, or hunt the web for a freebee. Enjoy!
For more info on Julian Marley, his current tour, or any of the other Ghetto Youth International crew, check here.

Or to just check out a live clip of the album's green track, "Boom Draw," check this out:
If that video doesn't get you packing up the greenwax, I'm not sure what else will.
Tiny Fires is something like a local Portland band. While they are not all Portlanders, this four piece rubs elbows with other great local musicians that are formed and shaped around Peapod Recordings.
They will grace the stage of the most secretive and (rumor has it) stunning performance space in our City. Find your way to 107 Hanover Street and look for signs of music, movement, and perhaps a small bird whispering the term Apohadion.
After a bit of digging, I was pleased to learn that one of the members is a great friend of mine from Portsmouth, NH who I have not seen in years. In fact my man is so famous he has a menu item named after him at THIS favorite APT eatery.
Five aMERICAN dOLLARS gets you through the door and you can bring your favorite beverage of choice. W2 and El Manicero hope to see you there!
I wanted to give a shout out to local scribe Christopher Gray for attempting to unravel a bit of Television history. He takes a look at THIS classic made for TV adaptation in last week installment of the Portland Phoenix.
Going further, I am barely able to walk down my hallway at night after consuming this impressive roster of unsettling films and books...Daphne du Maurier's series of short stories entitled Don't Look Now, Stephen King's Salem's Lot, Michael Wadleigh's film Wolfen, and the stellar Vincent Price joint The House on Haunted Hill.
I just need a bit of THIS to recalibrate and things will be all good. Now give me some candy.
To all my north country East Coast people: It's time to start thinking snow, waxing up the boards, and getting those season passes hanging on the key rack. There may not be quite enough snow yet to actually ski - although I heard something about an early-season Sunday River start - but it's certainly high time to start drinking more beer and talking about skiing.
With that said, Dr. D has a few early-season ski film recommendations...
First and foremost is the classic stand-by, the Warren Miller Entertainment joint for the year, this time titled "Dynasty." Sort of a montage of the best of the past couple decades, it's sure to be filled with footage that you or I could never replicate, but surely something we can talk about replicating. In Dr. D's experience, Warren Miller films are best viewed post-tequila, in the midst of a green wax haze. Check the trailer for some typical ski porn eye candy:
Local show times for this one are coming up right around the corner: Merrill Auditorium, Portland, ME: Wednesday, November 11, 2009 - 7:30pm
The other film of interest for this season is the latest installment from Utah's infamous Powderwhore Productions, known for their deep powder telemark ski porn. Dr. D starts twitching and convulsing at just the thought of such moments in reality. This year's film, "Flakes," is sure to get even the most lock-heeled fools thinking about switching it up. Check the trailer:
Anyway, Dr. D's got a couple dates in the next couple weeks with these two films out here in Colorado. The snow's been falling, the resorts are opening, and the backcountry is filling in, getting me stoked for what will likely be my best ski season yet. Hope to see you all out here at some point. The silo in Montezuma will be open and fully stocked with food, firewood, and beer whenever you make it out.
Come on kids. Get in the spirit. Put on your Halloween costumes and check out Freeport Community Players stage version of the groundbreaking 1981 horror spectacular.
You know B-Nice and W2 will be front and center getting our geek on. Even the Celtics have to take a backseat to B-movie bliss once in a while. Did I mention it is FREE!
Dr. D's been rocking the nine-hour days recently down in Durango, CO, re-taking his Wilderness First Responder [WFR] course through NOLS and their Wilderness Medicine Institute. The knowledge is crucial for those of us who frequent the backcountry and other zombie-infested regions of the world. You never know when you'll need these skills.
Anyway, what's emerged is a common thread: Basically, as long as you're well hydrated, you can pretty much prevent most wilderness emergencies. And sometimes water just isn't enough. In researching the best ways to stay hydrated, in the back or front country, Dr. D has found a miracle drink that will basically solve all your problems. Check it:
And if that's not convincing enough, check the sequel:
If this shit won't keep you hydrated and energized, I'm not sure what else will.
My man the Mad Scientist, an APT hall of famer in his own right and a most legendary attendee of the blurriest NBA Draft Party in years, welcomes a litte one into his life. Per the man...
"JAH was born at 11:34am after 10 hours of labor. He is a beautiful little guy weighing 9lbs 4 oz and 21 inches long. He's got the height for b-ball, now hopefully he did not inherit my coordination."
A must... ...two of my brothers from the Group Hug Crew...radio airwaves and vinyl...the way it should be done...every Wednes 11:30-1...free show mixes...
This is really entertaining and interesting, especially since the Jets are really fun to watch. Revis is the man, and you gotta love Rex "the Sex" Ryan or at least chuckle. Jay Feely is apparently a mad twitterer and well, check it out over at the times site here.
A few twitters from Mr. Feely for your consideration:
"July 22, @jayfeely: Heres my issue with both our political parties right now. No one has the guts and ability to find the real answers and committ to them."
"Oct. 2, @jayfeely: H1N1 is so new we don’t know about the longterm effects of the vaccine. But I want to protect my children: a quandry"
A quote from the article: "Feely jokes that most kickers are thoughtful because they have more time to research and read. He often buys 10 books at a time, the topics ranging from history and parenting to philosophy and sports." Check the story out, it is well done.
And I like Pavement. I like sports too, just less than I used to. Although my addiction to pro basketball is enormous by any standards. Pavement lead singer Stephen Malkmus also happens to be an NBA fiend.
He will be pulling the group back together for several shows in NYC shortly. I will not go. But thanks to the folks at Pitchfork I can watch the documentary The Slow Century over and over again...at least this week. And you can too. If you like Pavement or Sports.
