Ski Film Season 2009

To all my north country East Coast people: It's time to start thinking snow, waxing up the boards, and getting those season passes hanging on the key rack. There may not be quite enough snow yet to actually ski - although I heard something about an early-season Sunday River start - but it's certainly high time to start drinking more beer and talking about skiing.

With that said, Dr. D has a few early-season ski film recommendations...

First and foremost is the classic stand-by, the Warren Miller Entertainment joint for the year, this time titled "Dynasty." Sort of a montage of the best of the past couple decades, it's sure to be filled with footage that you or I could never replicate, but surely something we can talk about replicating. In Dr. D's experience, Warren Miller films are best viewed post-tequila, in the midst of a green wax haze. Check the trailer for some typical ski porn eye candy:

Local show times for this one are coming up right around the corner:

Merrill Auditorium, Portland, ME:
Wednesday, November 11, 2009 - 7:30pm

Thursday, November 12, 2009 - 7:30pm

The Music Hall, Portsmouth, NH:

The other film of interest for this season is the latest installment from Utah's infamous Powderwhore Productions, known for their deep powder telemark ski porn. Dr. D starts twitching and convulsing at just the thought of such moments in reality. This year's film, "Flakes," is sure to get even the most lock-heeled fools thinking about switching it up. Check the trailer:

For those of you out East, the only way to see this one is to head up to Brunswick, ME on November 13th for the New England Telemark International Telemark Film Festival at Bowdoin College. Best of all it's free! Check it out.

Anyway, Dr. D's got a couple dates in the next couple weeks with these two films out here in Colorado. The snow's been falling, the resorts are opening, and the backcountry is filling in, getting me stoked for what will likely be my best ski season yet. Hope to see you all out here at some point. The silo in Montezuma will be open and fully stocked with food, firewood, and beer whenever you make it out.

Powerthirst

Dr. D's been rocking the nine-hour days recently down in Durango, CO, re-taking his Wilderness First Responder [WFR] course through NOLS and their Wilderness Medicine Institute. The knowledge is crucial for those of us who frequent the backcountry and other zombie-infested regions of the world. You never know when you'll need these skills.

Anyway, what's emerged is a common thread: Basically, as long as you're well hydrated, you can pretty much prevent most wilderness emergencies. And sometimes water just isn't enough. In researching the best ways to stay hydrated, in the back or front country, Dr. D has found a miracle drink that will basically solve all your problems. Check it:

And if that's not convincing enough, check the sequel:

If this shit won't keep you hydrated and energized, I'm not sure what else will.

Newest Member of APT

My man the Mad Scientist, an APT hall of famer in his own right and a most legendary attendee of the blurriest NBA Draft Party in years, welcomes a litte one into his life. Per the man...

"JAH was born at 11:34am after 10 hours of labor. He is a beautiful little guy weighing 9lbs 4 oz and 21 inches long. He's got the height for b-ball, now hopefully he did not inherit my coordination."

Well done!
