On Saturday, Inspired by Emily over at Nothing-In-The-House and my girl Jen over at On the Bean Road, I set about to make a pie for Obama.
I had never made a pie before in my life. My enthusiasms were dimmed further when I learned that my wife (a pie guru herself) would be banging on doors all day in Auburn, ME.
I did take some solace in knowing that I come from some serious pie making stock. My grandmother was a legendary pie maker...Raspberry, Blueberry, Pumpkin, Apple, Strawberry Rubard, even Peach Pie were known to grace our table during the holiday season.
Needing motivation I headed over to City Hall and cast my ballot early. I was amazed at all the smiles and pleased to see a sign reading "We need Republicans to Help with the voting on Tuesday." That's right, where you at Republicans?
After voting I contacted my would-be-pie-Sensei, Dr. Jessica Hathaway, and implored her to get behind my Pie for Obama cause (code for: teach me how to make a pie because I am on my way to your house and won't take no for an answer).
The first step was to make the the mind limber.
Jessica earned a pie making black belt from her mother. She insisted there was only one way to make a crust, mix everything by hand. Yes Sensei!
Peep the forearm development.
Delicious Northern Spies and Cortland Apples purchased from the farmers market.
Jessica deftly decorated the pies with her deadly knife skills.
To the Obama Dome.
Volunteer Ken O'Brien drops into the Pie Enjoyment Zone.
Ken, taking note of the Delta symbol on the pie, looked at me after the first bite and began to weep. He said, "You can taste the change and hope." It was probably the molasses. Mission accomplished! Bow to your Sensei.
PS Iverson is about to be traded to Detroit for Chauncey and McD. What?

Nice work. I'm currently trying to find a good Sweet Potato Pie recipe for tomorrow night. It will be my first attempt. Anyone got any leads?
W2 got those skills like no other....
"Leads....leads?"
I can't decide if you're cuter in person or in blogson. The pie was delicious, and I'm sure Obama felt the positive shift in the force.
Way to go, Ward-o. What you got for tomorrow?
WOW Ward, I am totally impressed and inspired by your pie making. WAY TO GO! And nice call on the Northern Spies. Best pie apple, in my opinion.
I'm making my sweet potato Obama pie tomorrow after I return from volunteering at the polls. I must confess, I've never made sweet potato pie either, but I'm looking at doing a variation of this recipe: A sweet potato pie recipe, made with butter and sweet potatoes, along with vanilla and cinnamon.
Ingredients:
* 4 ounces butter, softened
* 2 cups cooked and mashed sweet potatoes
* 2 cups granulated sugar
* 1 small can (5 ounces, about 1/2 cup plus 2 tablespoons) evaporated milk
* 1 teaspoon vanilla
* 3 eggs, beaten
* 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon
* 2 prepared pie custs, unbaked
Preparation:
Mix butter, potatoes, sugar and evaporated milk until well blended. Add vanilla, eggs, and cinnamon; mix well. Pour into the prepared pie shells. Bake in a 350° oven.
I'll probably add ginger and nutmeg. For a good crust recipe, check out www.nothinginthehouse.blogspot.com
Thanks for all the pie support.
Vot suckas.
